Module Description

In this module, fourth-year students are introduced to the critical study of urban space through film, examining it as a product of historical, economic, political, and cultural processes that shape and are shaped by the people who inhabit cities. The module takes Cairo as its primary laboratory. It draws on a body of international critical urban theory, including the works of Henri Lefebvre, David Harvey, Loïc Wacquant, Michel Foucault, and Ananya Roy, and applies it directly to Cairo’s urban fabric through Egyptian and Arabic scholarship, field observation, and film analysis. The module is designed for students who wish to complement their technical architectural training with a critical understanding of the city. It does not aim to teach architectural or urban design so much as to equip students with theoretical skills in spatial analysis, and with the critical vocabulary of urban imagination, the capacity to read a city’s problems and to propose, project, or provoke alternatives to them by other, non-technical means. That is, students are expected to learn how to read the city as a raw living document, to ask who produces space and for whom, to situate architectural decisions within their broader social and economic contexts, and ultimately, to imagine the city otherwise.

يقدم هذا المقرر الاختياري البالغ ثلاث ساعات معتمدتين لطلاب السنة الرابعة بقسم الهندسة المعمارية بجامعة القاهرة مدخلًا الى الدراسة النقدية للفراغات العمرانية عن طريق تحليل بعض الكتابات الاجتماعية وتحديدًا الأفلام السينمائية اذ يتم معاملة الفراغ بوصفه نتاجًا مجتمعيًا يشكل عن طريق عمليات تاريخية واقتصادية وسياسية وثقافية تصنع ليس فقط الفراغ، بل المدن عامة وتتشكل بهم. يتخذ المقرر مدينة القاهرة مختبره الأساسي، ويستند الى عدد من النظريات الدولية للنقد العمراني، ويشمل ذلك اعمال هنري لوڤيڤر، ديفيد هارڤي، لويك فاكون، ميشيل فوكو، انانيا روي، ويطبقها مباشرة على النسيج العمراني القاهري عبر كتابات سواء عربية او مترجمة مع الملاحظات الميدانية وتحليل لأفلام تم اختيارها بعناية. صمم المقرر للطلاب الراغبين في اكمال تدريبهم المعماري، التقني بشكل كبير، بفهم نقدي أكبر واشمل للمدينة. لا يهدف المقرر لتعليم التصميم المعماري او العمراني بقدر ما يهدف لتزويد الطلاب بمهارات نظرية في التحليل المكاني ومفردات نقدية للخيال العمراني، أي ان الطلاب متوقع منهم ان يتعلموا كيف يقرؤون المدينة بوصفها وثيقة حية، وأن يسألوا من ينتج الفراغ ولمن، لعل ان يمزجوا يومًا ما قرارتهم المعمارية او العمرانية ضمن سياقاتها الاجتماعية والاقتصادية الاشمل.
